ACER was founded in 1976 by Mestre CELSO CARVALHO NASCIMENTO in Rio de Janeiro. Mestre Celso(68yrs) learnt the art of Capoeira from Mestre Arthur Emidio(78yrs) who started Capoeira in his childhood with a very old master who learn directly from an Ex-Slave. Mestre Celso having tought Capoeira for over 50yrs, he is now one of the oldest, active and living Capoeira Mestre in both Rio and the United Kingdom.

Associação de Capoeira Engenho da Rainha

Capoeira is a Martial Science that was developed in Brasil by African Slaves over 500yrs ago to fight oppression. It is believed that the Slaves desguised this art as a dance to prevent the Slave-masters from descorvering that the slaves could in fact physically defend themselves.

Capoeira was so well desguised with the instruments and music, the dance element and other assets that to this day it is still arguable whether Capoeira is a martial Art. The funny thing is the confusion is not only between non-Capoeira practitioners but Capoeristas(Capoeira practitioners)aswell.
