THE BERIMBAU

The berimbau is the dominant instrument in Capoeira and dictates the ryythm and nature of the game in the roda. The berimbau is made of a hard wooden bow known as a verga and is strung with a steel wire called the arame to produce the resonating sounds of the berimabu, a gourd is attached, a caxixi is used along with a wooden stick called a baqueta. The baqueta strikes the arame to produse the sound In conjuction with these a a dobrao is pressed against the arame to producedifferent notes There are three types of berimbaus The GUNGA (largest berimbau. deepest sound) The MEDIO (middle sized. mantains the rythm of the GUNGA) The VIOLA (small sized. Produces the sharpest sound
